Worm Wars IV v2.0.1 SE
written and tested by: Koksi
Even the worms thought they had eliminated their enemies, the fight between worms and ants starts its fourth round. But now the ants are back and on many squaremetres of lawn they fight for life and death. The story sounds like a thing thought out while drinking some beers and the game would also be ok if the story wouldn’t exist. Nevertheless we’re jumping right into the fight and comparing to the predecessor, Worm Wars IV comes along with improved graphics, but the sound isn’t as innovative as the gfx: midi-music borrowed from Command & Conquer and sound-effects known from Half-Life...
As troop-leader you’re now bristled with weapons when starting the fight. Using the cursor-keys you’re moving your hero around the terrain, with CTRL you’re splashing the ammunition and using Shift changes the selected weapon.
Of course you’re not fighting alone against the ants or bugs. A whole army of snipers, flame throwers, paramedic, tank-driver or helicopter driving worms are fighting on your side. Indeed you’ll never be able to control these units and so they’ll run after you more or less intelligent. To gain more abridgement (for not loosing your hero in the turmoil), your character has a golden cross drawn on its green helmet, but this is much more remarkable than in the predecessor (with no marker helping identify your hero).
Another change applies to the strategy elements which brained up the predecessor. Instead of buying items (better weapons, life energy etc.) you now just have to collect the scattered objects from the field.
Beside the already mentioned story-mode there’s existing a fast round too, you can call this a "quickie" ;-). In this mode you just have to choose between four ground types (grass, mud, ice and sand) and after the selection your only ambition is to survive against the ant-invasion as long as you can. A fifth type of ground as well as more powerful buddies are available when reaching sufficient scorepoints. By the way, this mode could also be played twosome on the same keyboard.
Finally there’s to mention, that all Worm Wars-fans should take a look at part four. Cute graphics (remembers to The Settlers) and a lot of shooting-action are warranting the download of Worm Wars IV. The changes in comparison to part three are not very important, so the same rating of 8 points are given to part four too.
Hint: The normal setup of the game, downloadable for example from the official website, contains spyware. Our version is using our own setup-routine, of course without the spywarefiles!
